![]() ![]() ![]() This is how we geolocated a video from 18 March 2019, that showed the aftermath of a US air strike hit in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region. This means that the quality can be poor, with fast movements, shaky hands, dropped cameras, overexposure, underexposure, low camera pixel quality and other flaws.Ĭouple this with the fact that amateur filming a video of any violent act - such as the unlawful killing of a civilian in conflict, torture, or police brutality - can be traumatic to watch, especially repeatedly.īuilding a panorama of the video can allow the investigator to repeatedly look at the surrounding topography needed to geolocate a scene, without being subjected repeatedly to the potentially traumatic images in the video. These videos are mostly filmed by amateurs who happen to be at the scene of the event – who themselves may be frightened or at risk. This requires us, painstakingly at times, to go through a collection of videos to work out exactly where and when something happened. Yet scenes from remote locations need to be verified – especially if we cannot get there in person. It’s why open source information has become so useful for human rights investigations at Amnesty International. Tools needed: Screengrab tool, presentation software package, open source satellite imagery from Google Earth Pro or satellite mode of any mapping tool that is availableĪnyone with a smartphone, an internet connection and a social media account can film a human rights violation. ![]() Here are some of the final embedded videos from this shoot.Tutorial on building a single panorama image from a video can help with verification in order to protect from repeatedly viewing the most traumatic parts of a video For full details on how to embed a 360 image on your chosen website go here. Since we have a wordpress site, there is a plugin written that allows these 360 images to resize with your phone or tablet. However, if you want to embed it on your website, I found to be a great platform. You can easily share it on FB or Twitter in this format. The next step is to choose 3D>Spherical Panorama>Export Panorama to flatten the image and allow it to be uploaded to your chosen destination. Not all tools are active in this mode, but you can heal or content-aware fill the areas as needed (per the video tutorial above). Now, it’s just a matter of fixing like you would normally in photoshop. The easiest way to do that is in the new Photoshop CC 2018 update whereby you can convert these flat images into spherical panoramas via this menu click: The feet and the shadow can be fixed in Photoshop. Notice that there are some small imperfections. When you finish the images they’ll import as a flat portrait – much like a flattened map of the world. The more you can do that, the better your 360 photos will be. Just try as much as possible to rotate around a fixed point. The apps walk you through where to position the phone. If you’re using an apple device, then you can download google street view which allows you to take 360 degree photos. Simply choose the spherical panorama option from the drop-down box in the photo app and start clicking away. On android phones like the google Pixel, there is nothing you need to do. ![]()
